Ecuadorians consider Cuenca the most charming city, located in a peaceful and relaxing setting. As you enter the city you can notice the outstanding skyline marked by shining church domes. Cuenca’s cobblestone streets, winding rivers, graceful ironwork balconies and beautiful gardens are part of the pleasant atmosphere of this historical city. The UNESCO declared Cuenca a World Cultural Heritage Site on December 1999.
One of the highlights are the beautiful handicrafts that can be found throughout the city, including embroidered blouses, wool sweaters, gold and silver filigree jewerly and weavings with tie-dyed patterns called ikat. Cuenca is also known for its elegant ceramic dishes and pottery, Crafts and fresh products can be found on sale at weekly Thursday fair, or the smaller Saturday market, located at the squares titled 9 de Octubre and 10 de Agosto.

THE CAJAS NATIONAL PARK
This National Park is only 21 miles away from Cuenca. It ranges in altitude from 9,840 ft. to 11,480 ft. Its 71,186-acre area includes mountains and 232 glacial lagoons, connected to each other by small rivers and streams. Two of the rivers surrounding Cuenca, the Tomebamba and the Yanuncay, begin in this area.
Cajas is his home to mammals such as the white-tailed deer, spectacle bear, puma, paramo deer, paramo rabbit, and the Andean tapir. Some of the most important bird species found here are the caracara, the condor, the Andean toucan and spectacle duck. The most common vegetation includes: chuquiragua, paramo grasses, yagual (Polylepis), romerillo, chachacoma, genciana, romerillo and the sarar. The Park also has some archeological Inca sites en the area of Molleturo, which historians believe have been a ‘tambo’ (resting areas for the Inca couriers Cuzco to Quito).

During this excursion, we will follow the famous "Inca Trail". This ancestral walk trough the past of the andean culture can now be done from the sacred canari lagoon of Culebrillas to the Ingarpica Inca ruins.
DAY 1: CULEBRILLAS
Departure from Cuenca toward Culebrillas, sacred lagoon located in the north of the Canar province. After approximatly 3 hours of ride we will arrive to the starting point of the trail. This walk will begin from the lower part of the Culebrillas river and get us to the Paredones ruins, next to the lagoon (5 hours walk). we will be camping there for the night.
DIA 2: INGAPIRCA
Deaprtures from Paredones to get on the famous "Inca Trail" and arrive to the Ingapirca ruins (5 hours walk) that we will visit. Return to the city of Cuenca by bus.
